  REVIEW:

Music and Lyrics . . . only aspects of the movie not appaling, actually, the music and the lyrics.

Finally, a romantic comedy that is really funny!  Hugh Grant plays a wash-up has-been pop star from the 80’s (Alex Fletcher)… and Drew Barrymore (Sophie Fisher), well, she waters his plants.  Alex Fletcher is pretty comfortable with his has-beeness, until he gets a once in a life time chance.  He’s been asked by the reigning pop star Cora Corman to write her next big song for her.  Alex’s problem, he’s great with music he just sucks a lyrics.  One day with Sophie is watering his plants, she spouts off some words that rhyme and he’s sure she must be able to write lyrics.  This begins their quirky and funny relationship while trying to beat the clock and get Cora her song in time.

Music and Lyrics is surprisingly funny, beginning with the opening - an 80’s era music video that’s absolutely ridiculous, yet exactly like every single video playing on MTV during that time.  The movie also offers some great characters.  Brad Garrett is fairly entertaining as Hugh Grant’s agent, and unknown actress Haley Bennett rocks as essentially a Britney Spears caricature.  The movie’s real strength, though, is Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore.  Both are enormously likable, and they have tremendous chemistry together, thus creating an entertaining experience for men and women alike.
